Microsoft Excel comes standard with a very powerful built-in programming language called VBA (Visual Basic for Applications). Having seen the cool things a colleague could do with this tool, I decided to invest some time learning it myself.

This is when I came across John Walkenbach's excellent book. Programming language books are hard to write, and this is the best written programming language book I have ever read. The explanations in the book are very clear, the examples are practical and relevant, the writing style is humorous and engaging. As with any programming language, expect to spend a good bit of time learning it (the book itself is quite long at over 1000 pages), but the investment is well worth your while. I would also recommend finding some practical projects at your work or for personal use and write some code to solve real problems. This will help you learn and keep you interested. The book comes with a CD filled with extremely useful and well organized examples that are easy to re-purpose for your own projects. It even includes a pdf version of the book (I wish more people offered this).  I can't think of anything I would improve in John's work which is the highest praise I can give to a book. Highly Recommended.

NOTE: There are now updated versions of the book for Excel 2010 and Excel 2013.
