Favorite Photography Quotes
Many photographers, besides being great craftsman of Pictures, are also quite skilled with the art of crafting sentences. I find some of the writing below inspiring, and this often helps me ground my own work. If nothing else, I appreciate them for their beauty, as I would appreciate any other work of art. Here they are in no particular order.
The Quotes
"My work comes from paying attention to the World, and in some ways it comes from the same place poetry comes from. My work comes through me like it would for a poet. You need to be true to yourself, do work that reflects you in some way and comes from your heart. That will always bring satisfaction and, I think, success."
- Joyce Tenneson
"Some people say my photos are sad, some think they are funny. Funny and sad, aren't they really the same thing? They add up to normality."
- Elliot Erwitt
"You have to be brave to admit your sense of beauty, which is a revelation of your own character. You reveal your innermost desires as a photographer. The world you would like to exist in. This can sometimes be awkward, silly, and embarrassing. It is a love letter to beauty"
- Tim Walker
"Every picture I take is because I want to, but it is not for me. If I was alone I wouldn't take pictures. I take pictures to help other people see things the way I see. I don't take pictures for myself. It would be like a politician doing politics for himself"
- Oliviero Toscani
"An art photographer is a photographer with an opinion"
- Mike Johnston
"Style is a voice, not a prop or an action. If you can buy it, borrow it, download it, or steal it, it is not a style. Don't look outward for your style; look inward."
- Cheryl Jacobs Nicolai
"Talent is the willingness to spend time."
- Wish I knew who said this...
